Denton Halloween Has Outgrown the Square. Here's the Rest of October From the Edges of Town.

On weekend evenings this October, a free DCTA shuttle leaves a parking lot at Golden Triangle Mall, 2201 S. I-35E, about every 20 minutes and heads for downtown Denton. The 2026 season is pushing Denton Halloween outward from the Square, and this mall lot is where that shift is easiest to see.

Three weeks remain in the citywide season, which the City of Denton runs from Oct. 1 through Sunday, Nov. 1, with more than 400 free and low-cost events. For people who live here, the easier plan for the back half of the month starts at the park-and-ride lot, the rec centers, the airport, and the restaurants south of the Square.

The Square hit its limit in year two

The numbers show why the city is spreading things out. In a City of Denton media advisory posted Sept. 28, 2026, the city says the first Denton Halloween in 2024 drew more than 600,000 visitors, and the 2025 season drew more than 800,000. That same year the Texas Legislature named Denton the Halloween Capital of Texas through 2035. The Denton Record-Chronicle's look back at the 2025 season quoted city spokesperson Dustin Sternbeck, who put traffic on the Square alone during that second season at about 883,000 people, roughly 200,000 more than the year before.

The business owners the Record-Chronicle interviewed gave a more mixed picture of those crowds. A manager at Old Bear, the vintage shop on the Square, told the paper that customers were excited and polite. The manager also described Halloween night this way:

"Halloween night was really, really insane. I don't know if that was expected. It was a lot of people. Very chaotic, but it was a lot of fun."

Old Bear has no public restroom, and so many October visitors came in asking for one that the manager suggested more public restrooms for the next season. Dawn Conner, owner of The Plot Twist on Oak Street, told the paper her romance book bar saw a big jump in foot traffic in the first two weeks of that October. That traffic didn't last through the month, and she saw no increase in revenue. "We did see a lot of new people," she said, "so maybe not all of those translated to additional business."

Sternbeck told the Record-Chronicle that the city wanted to improve parking above all, and that organizers had already started placing art installations and attractions beyond the main Square. In 2025 that meant a free Halloween maze on McKinney Street near City Hall, which drew more than 54,000 visitors, plus interactive phone booths outside Denton County Brewing Co., Hemlock Fox, and The Plot Twist. The 2026 season continues that approach.

The way downtown now starts at the mall

The parking fix took shape as a partnership between the city and DCTA, announced Oct. 1, 2026 and reported by Community Impact. The details are below as listed on DCTA's Denton Halloween page and the city's plan-your-visit guide.

Option Where When Note
Free weekend park-and-ride Golden Triangle Mall lot, 2201 S. I-35E, to the Oak/Oakland lot or Development Services at 401 N. Elm St. Saturdays 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., Sundays 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., through Nov. 8 DCTA says the round trip takes about 30 to 40 minutes
Day of the Dead shuttle Separate route, map on DCTA's page Saturday, Oct. 24 DCTA lists 10 a.m. to midnight
NCTC public garage 319 E. Sycamore St. Thu 5 to 8 p.m., Fri 5 to 10 p.m., Sat and Sun 2 to 10 p.m. Closed Oct. 23 to 25
Paid lots and street parking W. Mulberry; W. Walnut at S. Elm; part of the lot behind Wells Fargo Varies Square street spaces have a two-hour limit on weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sources disagree on one time. DCTA and Community Impact both list the Oct. 24 festival shuttle as starting at 10 a.m., but the Denton Halloween planning page says 10 p.m., so check DCTA's page that morning. The Denton Halloween guide also suggests parking along the A-train line, since its downtown stop is a few blocks from the Square.

The mall is also about to give people a reason to stay. The Denton Record-Chronicle's business roundup reports that Launch Family Entertainment plans to open inside Golden Triangle Mall on Oct. 30. It will have trampolines, a ninja course, virtual reality, arcade games, and a restaurant and bar. If that date holds, it falls on the last weekend of the season, with Halloween night the following day.

Four downtown events still ahead

The city's list of notable events still has four on or near the Square:

  1. Nightmare on Elm St. Basketball Tip-off, Wednesday, Oct. 21, 6 to 9 p.m. UNT's basketball teams play on a court set up on the Square at 111 N. Elm St. Since it's a weeknight, the weekend shuttle doesn't run.
  2. Cirque du Horror, Oct. 23 to 25. This is Denton's original family-friendly Halloween musical, performed under the Big Top Tent on Oak Street by the Orchestra of the Undead. The Day of the Dead festival schedule lists shows at 7 p.m. Oct. 23, at 4 and 9 p.m. Oct. 24, and a final show at 5 p.m. Oct. 25.
  3. Day of the Dead Festival, Saturday, Oct. 24. Gates open at 11 a.m. The Coffin Races run from noon to 4 p.m. on Hickory, Oak, and Industrial streets, and the Twilight Lantern and Costume Parade starts at 7 p.m. This is the day with its own shuttle and the day the NCTC garage is closed.
  4. Downtown trick-or-treating, Saturday, Oct. 31, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Businesses around downtown hand out treats. Halloween night is the one Old Bear's manager singled out as the most chaotic last year.

Some installations are new for 2026, according to the Denton Halloween attractions page. They include Bone Brigade outside Central Fire Station and Ghastly Gardens, a foggy haunted-forest walk. A projection-mapping light show on Hickory Street rounds out the after-dark options. These installations are another part of the city's effort to move crowds a few blocks off the Square.

The rest of October is spread across town

Libraries, rec centers, parks, a driving range, a shopping center, and the airport all have Halloween events on the calendar. These are the ones still ahead with confirmed 2026 dates.

Date Event Location
Wed., Oct. 14, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. STEAM Explorers, Halloween theme South Branch Library
Fri., Oct. 16, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Trunk-or-treat Teasley Commons, 3220 Teasley Lane
Fri., Oct. 16, 7 to 10 p.m. Goblins & Glow Golf North Lakes Driving Range, 2009 W. Windsor Drive
Sat., Oct. 17, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Hallo-Wing Denton Enterprise Airport, 5035 Warbird Drive
Sun., Oct. 18, 6 to 9 p.m. Ghost Hunt Emily Fowler Library
Tue., Oct. 20, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sweet & Spooky Felted Pumpkins North Branch Library
Fri., Oct. 23, 6 to 10 p.m. Halloween Carnival and Monster Mash Kids Markets MLK Jr. Recreation Center, 1300 Wilson St.
Sat., Oct. 24, noon to 4 p.m. Park & Play Owsley Park, 2425 Stella St.
Fri., Oct. 30, 6 to 11 p.m. Halloween movies Quakertown Park, 321 E. McKinney St.

Hallo-Wing is the most unusual of these. It's a trunk-or-treat at the airport where kids and adults can see aircraft up close and talk with pilots. The Eventbrite listing requires registration and shows ticket sales as ended, so anyone without a spot should confirm before driving out. The free carnival at MLK Jr. Recreation Center on Oct. 23 has games, goodie bags, face painting, bounce houses, a costume contest, and trick-or-treating. It's on the first night of Cirque du Horror, and the NCTC garage closes that same night, so the carnival gives families a Friday-night option across town from the downtown crowds.

Dinner south of the Square

Several places that opened or reopened recently, according to the Record-Chronicle roundup, are in South Denton and along I-35E. That puts them on the same side of town as the park-and-ride lot.

  • Scarvelli's Italian Restaurant, 820 S. I-35E, Suite 101, serves pasta, pizza, and cocktails in the former Milpa space.
  • Nandi's, 508 S. Elm St., Suite 105, opened Sept. 17 and serves biryani and tandoor dishes.
  • Mariscos El Fresco, a seafood restaurant at 518 Acme St., opened in September.
  • KashKan Dhaba has reopened at 703 Londonderry Lane after a temporary closure, now with indoor and outdoor seating and North and South Indian dishes.
  • Taqueria El Zacatecano has a coming-soon sign at 717 S. I-35E, Suite 100, off Teasley Lane, in the former Foodistaan storefront. No opening date has been announced.

Closer to downtown, Cream Bunny Bakery Cafe opened in September at 314 E. Hickory St., Suite 111, facing Russell Street. It serves breakfast, lunch, pastries, and gourmet doughnuts. Triptych Coffee Co. is expanding inside True Leaf Studio at 301 S. Locust St., where the plant shop is moving to a pop-up model. Either one makes an easy morning stop before the crowds arrive on a Saturday.

The season ends Sunday, Nov. 1. The park-and-ride keeps running through Nov. 8, and the Holiday Lighting Festival takes over Quakertown Park on Saturday, Dec. 5.
